The depth of the main grooves in the tread of a new tyre is between 8 and 9 mm. The wear indicator is at 1.6 mm, which the legal minimum, below which you must replace your tyres. For winter tyres, an additional indicator may be located at 4 mm, because it is prohibited in some countries, such as Austria, to drive below this limit.
Tip: Here's a quick and easy way to check your treadwear
using a 20p coin. Insert the coin into the main groove, if you can see any part of the outer band of the coin face, it might be time to change your tyres! Otherwise, you're OK for now.
How can I make my tyres last longer?
Inflating your tyres has a direct impact on the evenness of wear and the lifespan of your tyres.
If you overinflate, you may wear out the centre of the tread prematurely. On the other hand, if you drive underinflated, you'll wear out the ends of the tread prematurely.
Driving with the pressure recommended by your manufacturer will increase the lifespan of your tyres. For more information, see our tyre pressure guide (HERE).
